Short Bio
I am Chair of Applied and Computational Mathematics at the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (UK), and Professor of Numerical Analysis at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Ferrara (Italy). I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Bologna, and subsequently held visiting professorships at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA), the University of Wisconsin–Madison (USA), the University of OrlĂ©ans (France), and the University of Toulouse (France). I served as Department Chair in Ferrara from 2009 to 2018. I was awarded the Nelder Fellowship at Imperial College London (2015), the John von Neumann Professorship at the Technical University of Munich (2019), the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship (2023–2028), and a FIS2 Advanced Grant (2025–2029), the most competitive funding scheme of the Italian Ministry for University and Research, comparable to an ERC Advanced Grant. I am currently a member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIMAI) and of the Committee for Applications and Interdisciplinary Relations (CAIR) of the European Mathematical Society (EMS). I have served on the editorial boards of several international journals, including SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing (SISC), Communications in Mathematical Sciences (CMS), Kinetic and Related Models (KRM), SMAI Journal of Computational Mathematics (SMAI–JCM), and Networks and Heterogeneous Media (NHM). From 2026, I will serve as Editor-in-Chief of SIAM Multiscale Modeling and Simulation. The results of my research are reported in more than 200 publications and six books.
